Frequently Asked Question

What are top and bottom Ethernet ports used for?
Last Updated 2 years ago

On the backplate of the Typhoon HIL device (depending on a device model), you can find a number of Ethernet ports. Those ports can be used for three main purposes:

  1. Communication with the host PC for establishing a connection with the Typhoon HIL Control Center and its applications (HIL SCADA, Device manager, Firmware manager,..). You can find out more about setting up an Ethernet connection here.
  2. High-level communication protocols that run on Linux. These protocols are:
    - C37_118,
    DNP3,
    - IEC 61850 (GOOSE and MMS)
    - Modbus (Client, Server, and SunSpec)
    - OPC,
    - PROFINET,
    ...
  3. Time-critical communication protocols (where the sending period must be precise). These protocols are:
    - Ethernet Variable Exchange
    - IEC 61850 Sampled Values

HIL402 device

The HIL402 device has only one Ethernet port which can be used for one of the following two purposes (depending on the protocol that is used in the model):

  1. For communication with the host PC (1) and/or for high-level communication protocols. More than one communication protocol can be simulated at the same time.
    OR
  2. For time-critical communication protocols. Only one communication protocol can be simulated at the same time.

It is important to emphasize that these two functions can't be used at the same time (e.g. one time-critical protocol and one high-level protocol).

HIL404, HIL602+, and HIL604 devices

On the HIL404, HIL602+, and HIL604 devices there are two Ethernet ports that can be used independently:

  1. The bottom Ethernet port (labeled 1) can be used for communication between the HIL device and Typhoon HIL Control Center and/or for high-level communication protocols. More than one communication protocol can be simulated at the same time.
  2. The top Ethernet port (labeled 2) can be used for time-critical communication protocols. Only one communication protocol can be simulated at the same time.

Note: HIL404 devices with a serial number of 00404-04-00130 or less have incorrect number labels. On those devices, the bottom Ethernet port (labeled 2) can be used for communication with the host PC and/or for high-level communication protocols, while the top Ethernet port (labeled 1) can be used for time-critical protocols.

HIL606 device

On the HIL606 device, there are four Ethernet ports that can be used independently. They are located between the rotary switch and the JTAG connector. They serve the following functions:

  1. The bottom-left Ethernet port (labeled 1) can be used for communication between the HIL device and Typhoon HIL Control Center and/or for High-level communication protocols. More than one communication protocol can be simulated at the same time.
  2. The top-left Ethernet port (labeled 2) is currently not used, but it will be unlocked in the future.
  3. The two Ethernet ports on the right (labeled as 3 and 4) can be used for time-critical communication protocols. On each of those two ports, you can use one time-critical protocol.
